More than 3,000 songs written across a career that started at thirteen. A business built past music into film, television, restaurants, and a theme park that became one of the largest employers in Sevier County. A 59-year marriage to Carl Dean, largely out of the public eye, that lasted until his death in March 2025. At seventy-six, she co-wrote a bestselling thriller, Run, Rose, Run, with James Patterson, taking on a form she’d never worked in before. At seventy-nine she was still shaping Threads, filming the story behind each song herself.

“Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” both written during the same creative period in 1973, one about a marriage she feared losing and the other about a mentor she was choosing to leave. A comic timing built through decades of live performance and press interviews alike. And a business instinct rare for her era: she kept ownership of her masters and publishing when most artists around her signed them away, which is why the songs were still hers to license, still hers to reorchestrate for a symphony decades later.

A photographic trilogy, told three different ways because one telling could hold only so much: Songteller: My Life in Lyrics worked backward through the songs to find the life inside them, Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones did the same through the costumes, and Star of the Show: My Life on Stage through the performances. Each book took the same material and read it from a different angle, wisdom cultivated across three separate tellings. In Threads, she narrated the backstory behind each song herself, on camera, choosing what was worth passing down.
